Mary Poppins (2 Disc 40th Anniversary Special Edition) [DVD] (1963)

£4.30

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney’s pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world’s most magically idealized na…

The Work of Director Chris Cunningham [With Book] [DVD]

£17.99

The Work of Director Chris Cunningham, like the other volumes in the acclaimed Director’s Series (Spike Jonze and Michel Gondry) offers a feast of visual ingenuity, with one major difference: unlike the relatively playful brightness of Jonze and Gondry, Cunningham wants to involve you in his nightmares. From the urban monstrosities of Aphex Twin’s “Come to Daddy” to the limb-shattering weirdness o…

There’s Something About Mary — Special Edition (2 discs) [DVD] [1998]

£2.05

There’s Something About Mary is one of the funniest movies in years, recalling the days of the Zucker-Abraham-Zucker movies, in which (often tasteless) gags were piled on at a fierce rate. The difference is that co-writers and co-directors Bobby and Peter Farrelly have also crafted a credible story-line and even tossed in some genuine emotional content. The Farrelly brothers’ first two movies, Dum…

Beaches [DVD] [1989]

£2.15

Garry Marshall’s 1988 drama about a 30-year friendship between two women, one wealthy (Barbara Hershey) and the other (Bette Midler) seeking her fortune in show business, is well written (based on the novel by Iris Rainer Dart) and nicely textured in its contrast between the characters’ separate destinies. When Hershey becomes ill with cancer, the film takes a predictably sentimental course, yet M…

Moon [DVD] [2009]

Moon [DVD] [2009]

£2.76

Science fiction can encompass many genres–suspense, horror, action-adventure, romance, even comedy–but director Duncan Jones’s Moon doesn’t fit neatly into any of them. This smart, provocative film has no aliens or cool spaceships, and the effects (mostly consisting of model vehicles lumbering across the lunar surface) aren’t all that special; instead, the material is character- and story-driven…

Murder on a Sunday Morning (DVD) – A mesmerizing thrill ride

Murder on a Sunday Morning is a 2001 Academy Award-winning documentary film directed by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade and stars Brent Butler and Patrick McGuinness.

The movie begins at Jacksonville, Florida in May 2000, where a woman is shot in the head at point blank range in front of her husband. It’s Mary Ann Stephens who is shot to death and as the panic prevails, two hours later, a 15 year old African male — Brenton Butler, an American high-school student is arrested and found himself accused of the killing in one of the most shocking cases of mistaken identity ever.

Butler is arrested and knotted with this case as the prime suspect because he was seen in the vicinity of the crime. Now, it’s upto Butler’s attorney, a magnetic public defender — Patrick McGuiness to solve the case and relieve his client, Butler from this murder case. Patrick must put forward his legal skills against a mountain of counterfeit investigative work and corruption to save his client from life in prison.

When Patrick reopens the inquiry, after a dramatic and absolutely twisting sequence of events, he and his team uncover shocking evidence that raises serious doubts about the police investigation and subsequent questioning tactics. This slew of shocking and distressing elements involved in the case, help Patrick to save the innocent Butler and to trap the real mastermind behind the murder of Mary Ann Stephens. So who is behind Mary Ann’s murder? And what’s the concrete evidence in favor of Butler?
